Frequently Asked Questions

WHERE DID GILBERT THEATER GET ITS NAME?
Gilbert Theater is named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette, for whom the city of Fayetteville is also named. Born Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier in 1757, the Marquis was instrumental in persuading the French to join the American cause in the Revolutionary War. He last visited our city in 1825.

HOW DID GILBERT THEATER BEGIN?
Mr. Lynn Pryer founded Gilbert Theater in 1994, using the basement and garden of his historic Haymount home. Mr. Pryer moved to Fayetteville after retiring from a career in education in California to be closer to his family.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR ACTORS AND CREW MEMBERS?
We reach out to the community via open auditions and public announcements. We welcome all new members to Gilbert‘s “theater family” and cherish all of our volunteers!

WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES OF GILBERT THEATER?
We want to continue with our work:  providing quality, contemporary, socially relevant plays that move as well as entertain our community, using local talent on our stage, and serving our culturally diverse community into the ages.

WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT GILBERT THEATER?
By supporting the theater, with your time, theater attendance, or financial contribution, you become an integral component in this community asset. Gilbert brings something unique to the cultural landscape of Fayetteville; our supporters guarantee continued access to this “hidden gem” for seasons to come.
