On the Verge
By Eric Overmyer Directed by Dr. Paul Wilson The Victorian-era lady adventurers begin a trek into "Terra Incognita" - the phrase ancient cartographers used to denote unknown territory - and soon find themselves not only journeying through space but through time. On their trek they encounter several denizens of the future - among them a cannibal who takes on the personality of his last meal, a mysterious young man called a "teen-ager", a Method actor, a Yeti, the ultra-hip owner of a 1950s-wintage nightclub, an Oriental fortune teller who can quote any fortune cookie ever written, and a supernatural ebing who goes by the name of "Mr. Coffee". Blending what New York Times critic Mel Gussow called "Tom Stoppard's limber linguistics with the historic overview of a Thornton Wilder,: playwright Eric Overmyer takes us on a "thoroughly serendipitousjourney" through the history of the popular culture of the last hundred years. The GIlbert Theater production will feature a multimedia set and lighting design with music by David Byrne and Talking Heads. Eric Overmyer is best known as a writer and producer for such classic television shows as Law and Order, The Wire, Homicide: Life on the Street, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, and St. Elsewhere. Among his plays are: The Heliotrope Bouquet by Scott Joplin and Louis Chauvin, In a Pig's Valise, Dark Rapture, and In Perpetuity Throughout the Universe. Published by Broadway Play Publishing Inc. Produced in cooperation with the Methodist University Department of Theater. Show Times and Dates: Opening Night: March 19, 2009 March 19 - April 5, 2009 Thursday - Saturday - 8 PM Sunday - 2 PM
